Working with Accountants

Many accounting firms do not offer bookkeeping services, preferring to disassociate themselves and leave their clients to source their own bookkeeping requirements.

In our research we have found that the following factors deter many accounting firms from maintaining or expanding their bookkeeping activities.

1) It is one of the least profitable areas of their business.
Like in any business, to maximize income, preference will be given to the activities for which higher rates can be charged. Bookkeeping is not among these activities. For an accounting firm, allocating a significant amount of their time to bookkeeping, which can only attract their lower-end fees, is unsatisfactory for the firm and similarly unsatisfactory for their clients whom perceive that they are paying too much to have their accountant complete their books.

2) It is uninteresting.
Accountants find compliance work to be particularly droll when compared with other parts of their business. Tax planning, corporate advisory, due diligence and business structuring are among the activities aspired to by junior accountants and enjoyed by senior accountants. Bookkeeping is not enjoyed or aspired too. Most accountants prefer to move on from bookkeeping after completing ‘Accounting 101’.

3) It is risky.
Accounting firms will either employ a bookkeeper or have their junior accountants complete the bookkeeping work for their clients. Some firms are even outsourcing their data entry to India. Like any work completed by that firm, if there are any issues with the service or quality of work, the firm’s brand name and relationship with their clients is at risk. Given that bookkeeping is high volume and the attention to detail is paramount, it is prone to errors particularly when the responsibility is left to the less experienced members of the firm.
